A new venture in Toronto, ON
Since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis in Tigray, an autonomous region
in northern Ethiopia that was invaded in November 2020, Tigrayan Christians in
Canada have limited access to their family and community in Tigray. They need
a space to connect and worship in their heart language, offer practical
support to those affected by the situation in Tigray, and both pray and
intercede for God to end the conflict.
In response to these felt needs, a Discerning Community took shape in Toronto,
Ontario. For a period of about 18 months, a team of leaders discerned how they
could partner with Jesus within their language and cultural group. Together,
they sought to strengthen existing relationships within the Tigrayan
community, while reaching out to other Tigrayans in Toronto—so they, too,
could come to know Jesus.
In July of 2024, having spent the previous year and a half discerning and
discovering how they could join Jesus in mission for this community, they felt
affirmed in many ways to continue to provide a place of worship for this
unique community. As of result of this time, Toronto Community Alliance Church
has come alongside this community by providing a place of worship, as well as
becoming the lead partner.
